With rising sea temperatures driven by the heatwave, nearly 300,000 fish have been reported dead at fish farms in the Pohang area of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
According to the city of Pohang, as of August 7, a total of 277,000 fish—including olive flounder and starry flounder—died across 27 fish farms in the jurisdiction due to high water temperatures, causing an estimated 175 million won in property damage.
Previously, a high water temperature advisory was issued for all coastal waters of Pohang starting at 2 p.m. on August 3.
In addition, as of August 7, water temperatures at two locations—Hajeong-ri in Guryongpo-eup and Bangeo-ri in Cheongha-myeon—recorded 27.6°C (82°F) and 28.1°C (83°F) respectively, as high coastal water temperatures persist.
To minimize damage from high water temperatures at fish farms, the city of Pohang is stepping up efforts by supplying liquid oxygen and circulation pumps, and expanding emergency equipment and response supplies.
