Today's highest temperature at Seoul's representative observation station reached 38°C (100°F).
This ranks as the third-highest early August temperature since weather observations began, making it the hottest Ipchu (the beginning of autumn) on record, defying the notion that autumn has arrived.
There were reports yesterday that Seoul's Yeongdeungpo district hit 40°C (104°F), but the Korea Meteorological Administration does not recognize official data from locations influenced by artificial heat sources such as air conditioner outdoor units.
And the Yeongdeungpo observation point is precisely one of those locations.
Consequently, the 40.2°C (104.4°F) recorded in Nowon marks the first instance this year of temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) in Seoul.
Let us also take a look at the typhoons.
The 13th typhoon, Dolphin, is projected to make landfall in Shanghai, China.
Due to its indirect influence, strong winds and swells may occur in Jeju Island today and tomorrow.
Strong wind advisories have also been issued for mountainous areas and all of Seogwipo in Jeju Island.
Reports have emerged that the Korean Peninsula is on high alert due to a triple typhoon situation, as Dolphin is heading to China alongside two additionally generated typhoons.
However, the 14th typhoon dissipated just a day after its formation, and the 15th typhoon, Chanthu, also has a very low likelihood of affecting South Korea.
As the upper-level high-pressure system—one of the two high-pressure systems that have blanketed the Korean Peninsula like a blanket—moves away, the intense heat will ease slightly starting tomorrow.
However, heatwave advisory-level sweltering conditions around 35°C (95°F) are expected to persist.

Starting tomorrow, rain will fall primarily along the east coast due to the influence of north-easterly winds.
Heavy rain of over 150 mm is forecasted for the eastern coast of Gangwon Province.
