Today (August 7) marks Ipchu, the beginning of autumn on the lunar calendar, but the heat wave is only intensifying further. In fact, it has been recorded as the hottest Ipchu in history.

The heat reached its peak in western regions today.
The daytime high in Seoul soared to 38°C (100°F), the highest temperature of this summer, with Nowon-gu in Seoul even surpassing 40°C (104°F).
Consequently, today's Ipchu has been recorded as the hottest since meteorological observations began 119 years ago.
However, as this extreme heat wave is expected to ease somewhat starting tomorrow, the severe heat wave alert has been downgraded to a standard heat wave warning.
Tomorrow's daytime high in Seoul is forecast at 35°C (95°F), and the day after tomorrow at 33°C (91°F).
Even so, very hot weather well above average years will continue.
Over the weekend, influenced easterly winds will bring rain to the east coast and Jeju Island.
Heavy downpours of up to 150mm or more will concentrate in Gangwon Yeongdong, while 5 to up to 80mm of rain is expected in other parts of the east coast and Jeju.
Additionally, scattered showers of 5 to 40mm are expected in inland areas tomorrow.
Although the heat wave will ease slightly, daytime highs in Seoul will continue to hover around 33°C to 35°C (91°F to 95°F) through next week.
