As a severe heatwave continues day after day, an elderly man in his 80s was found collapsed and dead while engaging in outdoor activities in a rural village in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, prompting a police investigation into whether the death was heat-related.
At around 4:25 p.m. yesterday (August 6), a report was received that a man in his 80s, identified as Mr. A, had collapsed in the backyard of a detached house in a rural area of Anjung-eup, Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
Fire authorities were dispatched following a report stating, "It seems someone who was pulling weeds has passed away." They administered emergency measures to Mr. A, who was in cardiac arrest, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A heavy heatwave warning had been in effect for the Pyeongtaek region since 11:00 a.m. on August 5, and the temperature around Anjung-eup reached 35°C (95°F) at the time Mr. A was found.
Police plan to investigate the exact cause of Mr. A's death, including whether it was caused by a heat-related illness.
A police official stated, "We are conducting a comprehensive investigation into what kind of activity Mr. A was engaged in at the time, as well as whether he had any underlying medical conditions."
