President Lee Jae-myung appointed Kim Tae-yoo, a professor at Seoul National University's College of Engineering, as the vice chairperson of the presidential Committee on Regulatory Rationalization—a position equivalent to the prime minister level—on today (7th), announced senior presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung in a written briefing.
This appointment comes about a month after former Vice Chairperson Lee Byung-tae resigned following controversy over his remarks regarding the May 18 democratization movement.
Senior Spokesperson Kang stated that Vice Chairperson Kim served as the presidential advisor for information science and technology during the Roh Moo-hyun administration, making him a top expert in technology economics and national strategy who bridges engineering, economics, and industrial policy.
In particular, expectations are high that he will design macro-regulatory rationalization strategies linked to cutting-edge industries such as AI, semiconductors, and robotics, based on his deep understanding of industry and technology.
Kang further emphasized that he is "the right person for regulatory innovation, possessing public-private leadership and convergent insight to leapfrog South Korea into a technology-driven, ultra-gap 'first mover'."
President Lee also appointed Kim Heung-kyu, currently a professor of political science and international relations at Ajou University and director of the US-China Policy Institute, as the chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy.
The presidential office explained that Chancellor Kim is a leading expert in East Asia diplomacy and security, as well as a practical scholar equipped with profound insight and rich field experience spanning academic research, education, and policy consulting.
Senior Spokesperson Kang stated, "Based on his experience serving as a professor at the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security—the predecessor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy—we expect him to elevate the academy into a top-tier specialized research and educational institution for the AI era, build a strategic research foundation that supports national interest-centered practical diplomacy, and nurture future diplomatic talent."
