Broadcaster Shin Dong-yeob has issued an apology following controversy over inaccurate remarks he made regarding the musical performance environment in Daehangno on the YouTube variety show "Zzanhan Bro".
The issue began from a video released on June 3 on the YouTube channel "Zzanhan Bro Shin Dong-yeob". While having a drinking talk with guests Boom and Nucksal, Shin discussed the topic of musicals and made remarks to the effect of, "Daehangno mostly has small theaters, so they don't do musicals there. Musicals are performed in large theaters, so what is done in Daehangno is small-theater musicals. You don't even need to wear microphones for those."
After the video was released, strong backlash arose among theater industry insiders and audiences.
Viewers responded in the comments section with rebuttals such as, "Performances that started in Daehangno do well in Korea and are even performed overseas," "It is a remark that failed to consider the many people working hard every day performing in Daehangno right now," and "Even if classified as a small theater, there are many venues too large for unamplified voices to carry, so microphones are frequently worn."
As the controversy grew, Shin posted a statement on the "Zzanhan Bro" YouTube community page on June 6. He stated, "I sincerely bow my head and apologize to everyone who was hurt and disappointed by my careless words and actions during the recent broadcast of 'Zzanhan Bro'."
He went on to say, "Daehangno is a very meaningful and special space to me," adding, "I have felt deep resonance and emotion watching numerous masterpieces such as "Subway Line 1" and "Finding Mr. Destiny" in Daehangno." He added, "That is why I have always held affection and respect for the Daehangno stage and performing arts."
Regarding the background of the controversial remarks, Shin explained, "Caught up in the banter exchanged with the cast during the broadcast, I ended up making lighthearted remarks that failed to consider the actual environment of the venue and the hard work of countless people."
He stated, "I once again deeply apologize to everyone who felt discomfort and hurt due to my lacking words and actions," and added, "In the future, I will be much more cautious in my words and actions wherever I am, and I will always maintain a humble mindset toward the dedication of those who create stage arts."
