US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning so-called birth tourism. The move is seen as an effort to rally his base ahead of the midterm elections.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to deny US citizenship to babies born through so-called birth tourism.
Under the new measure, children born to individuals who enter the United States after misrepresenting their purpose of entry will not be granted citizenship.
Stating that the move directly targets the "birth tourism industry," Trump directed the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security to launch a massive and aggressive crackdown.

This executive order is part of the Trump administration's immigration policies aimed at preventing children born to foreign parents residing in the US temporarily or illegally from acquiring citizenship.
In particular, this is interpreted as a measure to maintain policy continuity after an executive order banning birthright citizenship faced a roadblock in the US Supreme Court.

Analysts also suggest the move is intended to showcase achievements to consolidate his base ahead of the November midterm elections.
Previously, the US Supreme Court invalidated Trump's executive order restricting birthright citizenship in a 6-to-3 decision in June.
The ruling was based on the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to individuals born on US soil.
Consequently, this new measure is also expected to inevitably trigger controversy over whether it violates the Constitution.
