A man in his 20s who was hired as a daily housekeeper through the second-hand trading platform Danggn has been arrested by police on charges of stealing valuables from his client's home.
The Seoul Nowon Police Station announced that it booked the man in his 20s, identified as A, on charges of theft on the 5th.
A is accused of visiting the home of the victim, B, located in Nowon-gu, Seoul, on the 2nd and 3rd, and stealing valuables including a pearl necklace, gold rings, and a gold bracelet—which were keepsakes belonging to B's mother kept inside a wardrobe—along with 60,000 won in cash.
On the 1st, A approached B, who was looking for a daily housekeeper on the second-hand trading platform Danggn, and accepted the job. The following day, A cleaned B's home for about three hours and received a daily wage.
Afterwards, when B complained that the cleaning quality was unsatisfactory, A visited B's home again on the 3rd, cleaned for about an hour, and left.
The next day, B noticed that the jewelry case kept in the wardrobe had disappeared.
Initially, B's stance was not to report the matter to the police if the mother's keepsakes could be returned. However, upon learning that A had already sold the jewelry to a gold shop and melted some of it down, making recovery impossible, B reportedly filed a police report.
It was confirmed that A stated the crime was committed while suffering from personal debts, such as being pressured by loan sharks for repayment.
The police plan to investigate A regarding the exact amount stolen and the motive for the crime before forwarding the case to prosecutors.
