A newly built wedding venue in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, which was scheduled to open in September, has cast uncertainty over its opening due to suspended construction, sparking fierce protests from engaged couples who had booked their ceremonies there.
According to media reports on Thursday (August 6, 2026), the wedding venue, slated to open in Changwon, had accepted reservations by informing contractors that construction would be completed by the end of July this year, with ceremonies to begin in September [INDEX].
However, at the construction site on that day, a significant portion of the work, including interior finishing and equipment installation, remained incomplete, and no work was taking place.
The wedding venue management had previously explained that the construction schedule experienced setbacks due to delays in the supply of materials imported from abroad.
As recently as last month, they had assured contractors that weddings booked for September and October would proceed normally.
However, in a text message sent to contractors earlier this month, they notified them, saying, "Due to unexpected construction suspension measures, it has become difficult to complete the construction within the scheduled timeline," and "It will be difficult to proceed normally with weddings in September and October."
It is reported that the wedding venue construction faced setbacks as loans from financial institutions were delayed.
Contractors who abruptly received notification that it would be difficult to hold their weddings are furious.
Approximately 500 engaged couples have joined a group chat created to share damage situations and response measures.
Mr. A, who has a wedding booked for this coming October, said, "When I visited in June, the exterior of the building was mostly finished and I was told that only the interior design was left, so I never imagined there would be setbacks in construction," adding, "There are even contractors who have already paid additional costs such as for dresses just a month before their wedding."
They continued, "Most other wedding venues are fully booked for September and October, and canceling ancillary contracts such as photography and video incurs penalty fees," adding, "The wedding venue side says they will support the costs of moving to an alternative venue, but trust has already been broken with the contractors."
On online wedding-related communities, reactions are continuing, such as "How can we trust and contract with a company like this when preparing for a once-in-a-lifetime wedding?"
It is reported that the contractors are demanding refunds of their deposits while reviewing legal responses against wedding planner companies associated with the wedding venue.
