Today marks Ipchu, the start of autumn on the lunar calendar, but it is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far.
Currently, severe heatwave warnings have been expanded to the greater Seoul area, as well as parts of the Honam region and western Gangwon province (Gangwon Youngseo). Yesterday, Seoul recorded a daytime high of 37.9°C (100°F).
Today, temperatures in Seoul are projected to skyrocket up to 39°C (102°F).
Elsewhere, Jeonju is expected to reach 39°C (102°F), Chuncheon 38°C (100°F), and Daejeon and Daegu 37°C (99°F).
Many of you are probably wondering how long this heat will continue.
The extreme heat will peak today before temperatures drop slightly starting this weekend, bringing daytime highs in Seoul down to around 34°C (93°F).
However, heatwave advisories are still expected to remain in effect.
Meanwhile, rain is forecast for the weekend, mainly centered around the east coast (Donghae coast) and Jeju Island.
In particular, heavy rain is expected to pour along the east coast of Gangwon province starting tomorrow, with more than 150 mm of heavy rainfall forecast over the weekend, requiring special caution against safety accidents during the vacation season.
Currently, the temperature in Seoul stands at 29.1°C (84°F), starting off as hot as the daytime weather.
Inland areas will see passing showers on Saturday afternoon.
