A bill concerning humanitarian assistance to North Korea has been reintroduced in the U.S. Senate after a hiatus of five years.
According to the website of the Congressional Research Service on the 6th local time, Senator Ed Markey (Democrat-Massachusetts), a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, introduced the bill the previous day.
Senator Elizabeth Warren (Democrat-Massachusetts) joined as a co-sponsor.
Congressional Research Service records show that Markey previously introduced a bill under the same name in 2021, making this reintroduction roughly five years later.
While the specific details of the new bill have not yet been disclosed, it is expected to be nearly identical to the 2021 legislation.
At that time, Markey's office explained that the bill would "amend the sanctions implementation methods of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Department of State, and the UN Security Council North Korea Sanctions Committee to ensure that aid is successfully delivered to those in need."
