Gyeonggi Province announced on August 5 that the local tax revenue delinquent tax management unit, tasked with encouraging the payment of overdue taxes and conducting fact-finding surveys, has officially been launched.
Around 400 people attended the launch ceremony held at the Gyeonggi Provincial Government complex on August 5, including Governor Choo Mi-ae and officials from the management unit.
The management unit operated in 13 cities and counties last year and has been expanded to all 31 cities and counties this year.
A total of 576 investigators, selected through regional recruitment procedures starting in June, will carry out delinquency management duties—such as conducting fact-finding surveys on tax delinquents and custom collection activities—from August to November.
They plan to check whether delinquents actually reside at their registered addresses and assess their ability to pay on-site. The unit will pursue aggressive collection activities against intentional and habitual delinquents, while providing counseling and guidance tailored to the payment conditions of those facing economic hardships.
Delinquent taxes in Gyeonggi Province stand at 1.4982 trillion won this year, showing an upward trend every year.
Governor Choo stated at the launch ceremony, "Please strive to ensure that this is not a harsh fairness, but a warm and inclusive fairness—one that people can lean on in difficult times." She added, "I made a bombshell announcement regarding Gyeonggi Province's finances today, and I will make every single valuable coin you collect serve as a priming water to make provincial administration more inclusive, innovative, and safely protected."
