A bench-clearing incident occurred during the Major League Baseball (MLB) game between the Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers after five batters were hit by pitches.
While no physical brawl broke out, Seattle left-handed reliever Gabe Speier, who hit a batter, and Seattle manager Dan Wilson were ejected.
During the game held on August 6 (KST) at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, Seattle starting pitcher Bryan Woo hit Detroit batters three times with pitches.
However, the hit-by-pitches allowed by Woo were not life-threatening or dangerous, as they struck elbow guards or involved breaking balls hitting the feet.
Yet, when Speier took over for Woo and threw an inside fastball to right-handed batter Gleyber Torres, he hit him on the left thigh.
As Torres and Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh exchanged words, Detroit manager A.J. Hinch rushed to the batter's box to restrain Torres, prompting players from both teams to flood the field from their dugouts and bullpens.
The umpires ejected Speier for causing the bench-clearing incident and also handed a red card to manager Wilson, who protested the decision.
Left-handed pitcher Enmanuel De Jesus, who previously played for the KBO League's Kiwoom Heroes and KT Wiz, hit Raleigh with a 151 km/h fastball as soon as he took the mound in the 7th inning, marking the only hit-by-pitch by a Detroit pitcher.
Seattle won the game 4-2.
