Son Heung-min's scoring streak, which saw him find the back of the net in every match since the World Cup, has come to an end.
Starting in the Leagues Cup league phase opening match between LAFC and Chivas Guadalajara (Mexico) held at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles today (August 6, Korea time), Son played without recording an attacking point before being substituted out for Tyler Boyd in the 86th minute (41st minute of the second half).
LAFC played to a 1-1 draw against Chivas over 90 minutes before winning 5-4 in a penalty shootout.
Son was aiming for his fifth consecutive official match with a goal in today's game.
Having previously scored in four straight Major League Soccer (MLS) matches, Son's streak of consecutive matches with a goal in all competitions was halted, but his quest for consecutive scoring games in the league will continue.
With Son leading his teammates wearing the captain's armband, LAFC claimed the opening goal in the 38th minute of the first half.
Receiving a pass from Timothy Tillman, Martinez delivered a low cross from the right flank, and an onrushing Denis Bouanga fired a right-footed shot to shake the net.
Chivas responded with an equalizer four minutes later.
Roberto Alvarado finished off a forward pass from Bryan Gonzalez with a precise left-footed low shot right in front of the goal area.
Finishing regulation time tied 1-1, the two teams settled the match through a penalty shootout immediately without extra time, in accordance with tournament rules for the league phase.
As a result, LAFC secured 2 points for winning the penalty shootout, while Chivas took home 1 point.
