The Democratic Party of Korea stated that it will do its utmost to ensure the stable settlement of the new criminal justice system following the Cabinet's approval of the promulgated amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act, which centers on the complete abolition of prosecutors' investigative powers.
Acting Party Leader and Floor Leader Han Byung-do said during a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly today (the 5th), "We will make thorough preparations for follow-up legislation and institutional adjustments" (stemming from the amendment to the Criminal Procedure Act), adding, "We will not stop our maximum efforts to ensure that the new criminal justice system takes firm root in this land."
He continued, "We will form a task force (TF) to directly listen to the voices of (crime) victims, bereaved families, and support organizations," emphasizing, "We will prevent (police) investigative delays, shoddy investigations, and the burial of cases, while ensuring that victims' rights to file objections and access records are substantially guaranteed in the field."
He also stated, "We will establish a dedicated complementary and reinvestigation system so that cases where police complementary investigations or reinvestigations are inadequate or difficult to entrust back to the same investigative agency can be handed over to the Serious Crime Investigation Agency (Jungsuchung) for investigation," adding, "We will establish personnel and support systems so that the Serious Crime Investigation Agency can fully perform its role upon launch."
Furthermore, regarding the People Power Party's criticism of the Criminal Procedure Act amendment, he pointed out, "It is a malicious political offensive and blatant black propaganda that incites public anxiety," adding, "Malicious instigation that twists the truth for political strife, threatens the public, and creates anxiety will be turned away by the people."
Supreme Council Member Hwang Myeong-sun emphasized, "The police, who have now come to the center of investigations, must be deeply determined to gain public trust in investigation fairness, investigative capabilities, and victim protection," adding, "With bone-crushing resolve, they must implement effective investigations, control devices, and measures to strengthen victim protection."
In addition, regarding People Power Party lawmaker Seo Bum-soo sparking controversy over a verbal blunder related to the "Busan roundhouse kick case," he said, "It is reopening the wounds of the victim," and added, "This is not a matter that can be covered up with a single apology."
He then urged the People Power Party to formulate recurrence prevention measures, stating, "Politics that turns the tears of victims into a laughingstock will never be forgiven by the public."
