▲ Expansion of Severe Heat Wave Alert Areas
With the additional issuance of the severe heat wave alert—the highest level of heat advisory—more than 40 percent of the Seoul metropolitan area is now under a severe heat wave warning.
The Korea Meteorological Administration issued additional severe heat wave alerts at 10:00 a.m. today (August 5) for Gwangmyeong, Yeoncheon, Pocheon, Gapyeong, Namyangju, Uiwang, Hwaseong, eastern Yangpyeong, and western Yangpyeong in Gyeonggi Province, as well as Cheongyang in South Chungcheong Province, and southern Incheon.
This marks the first time a severe heat wave alert has been issued for the Chungcheong region.
Combining all of Seoul and the areas where previous severe heat wave alerts remain in effect, 20 out of 46 land weather advisory zones in the metropolitan area—or 43 percent—are now under severe heat wave alerts.
Heat wave warnings remain in effect for the remaining 26 zones.
A severe heat wave alert is issued when regions experiencing a daily maximum apparent temperature of 35°C (95°F) or higher for two or more consecutive days are expected to see a maximum apparent temperature of 38°C (100°F) or higher, or a maximum temperature of 39°C (102°F) or higher, for at least one day.
