As severe heatwaves continue in Japan, more than 9,000 people have been rushed to hospitals due to heatstroke over the past week, NHK reported today.
According to data compiled by Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency under the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, 9,180 people across the country were transported to hospitals for heatstroke during the one-week period from July 27 to August 2.
By region, Tokyo recorded 898 cases, Osaka Prefecture 842 cases, and Aichi Prefecture 601 cases.
In Kumamoto Prefecture, where a magnitude 7.1 strong earthquake occurred on July 28, 309 people were transported to hospitals, marking a 1.4-fold increase compared to the previous week.
Among those hospitalized, 7 people died, and 3,588 cases were severe enough to require hospitalization.
Meanwhile, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Medical Examiner's Office, 4 people died within the 23 wards of Tokyo yesterday due to suspected heatstroke symptoms.
