Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel met with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun today (August 4) to officially begin her tenure as ambassador.
Ambassador Steel arrived at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs building in Jongno-gu, Seoul, this afternoon to submit a copy of her credentials to the ministry's chief of protocol.
Newly appointed foreign ambassadors to South Korea are required to present their credentials from their home country's head of state to the president, but they can begin official activities after submitting a copy of their credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs beforehand.
Following the submission of the copy of her credentials, Ambassador Steel paid a courtesy call on Minister Cho Hyun.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Ambassador Steel's courtesy call on Minister Cho served as an introductory visit following her assumption of office, during which they planned to discuss ways to further develop the South Korea-U.S. alliance.
Ambassador Steel did not respond to reporters' questions regarding what she would discuss with Minister Cho.
Her visit drew attention as she was accompanied by her husband, attorney Shawn Steel.
