A vacationer in their 70s who was swept away and drifted by a rip current off the coast of Hansom Beach in Donghae, Gangwon Province, on August 3 was safely rescued thanks to CCTV monitoring by the Donghae Coast Guard operations center.
According to the Donghae Coast Guard on the 4th, while monitoring CCTV footage of Hansom Beach at 3:03 PM on the 3rd, the operations center spotted a vacationer in their 70s, identified as A, rapidly drifting out to sea on an inner tube after being caught in a rip current.
A was pushed about 120 meters away from the shore, placing them in a dangerous situation where it was difficult to return to land on their own.
The Donghae Coast Guard immediately dispatched a coastal rescue boat from the Mukho substation and a land patrol team to the scene, sharing the real-time locations of the rescue units and the drifting person to support the operation.
Upon arriving at the scene, the coast guard tracked the direction of the drift and safely rescued A using a motorized rescue board.
A was confirmed to have no health issues.
Donghae Coast Guard Chief Han Dong-soo stated, "During the summer season, rip currents can occur suddenly and sweep people out to the open sea in an instant, so special caution is required."
