The domestic secondhand trading platform sales of an overseas seasoning banned from importation into South Korea due to the detection of narcotic ingredients have been blocked.
The Mapo Police Station in Seoul announced today (August 4) that it detected the seasoning product "Everything But the Bagel Sesame," sold by the U.S. grocery chain Trader Joe's, being traded on Danggeun Market and subsequently blocked transactions for the item.
According to the National Forensic Service's appraisal results, the product contains poppy seeds, from which the narcotic components morphine and codeine were detected. Police determined that individuals who purchased the product as overseas travel souvenirs had been selling it on platforms like Danggeun Market.
Consequently, with the cooperation of Danggeun Market, the police blocked posts related to the product from appearing on the platform and arranged for a "transaction restriction notice" to be displayed whenever users attempt to register the product for sale.
Police explained, "This product is subject to the Narcotics Control Act," adding, "Not only the sellers but also the buyers can be subject to criminal punishment."
In fact, the police are currently investigating individuals who bought and sold the product on Danggeun Market by booking them on charges of violating the Narcotics Control Act.
