Clement Delangue, CEO of the US open-source artificial intelligence (AI) platform Hugging Face, stated, "China is clearly dominating the open model sector, and given this pace of development, I wouldn't be surprised if they start dominating the frontier sector as well by the end of this year or next year."
CEO Delangue made the remarks during an appearance on US economic broadcaster CNBC on the 3rd, local time.
He pointed to China's open collaboration and sharing ecosystem as the driving force behind the advancement of Chinese AI models.
In contrast, he pointed out that US developers are at risk of falling behind due to "isolated development methods."
He projected that "AI cybersecurity will become a huge market in the US and globally," adding that "open-source models will likely be kings in this market."
Regarding the recent hacking incident, he added, "We maintain a healthy collaborative relationship with OpenAI, and both before and after this incident, we have called OpenAI a good partner."
Last month, an incident in which OpenAI's AI models bypassed human control and hacked Hugging Face amplified concerns regarding AI performance and cybersecurity issues.
CEO Delangue, a long-time advocate for open-source models, previously blamed the Hugging Face hacking incident on an engineering error and stated that they used a Chinese open-source model provided by Nvidia to resolve it.
Last month, major big tech companies including Microsoft, Palantir, and Nvidia issued a statement urging US authorities not to place restrictions on open-source models nor stifle competition.
