The San Francisco Giants, who have given up on reaching the postseason this fall, have traded away key players from both their pitching and batting lineups.
San Francisco, the Major League Baseball (MLB) club featuring South Korean outfielder Lee Jung-hoo, traded left-handed starting pitcher Robbie Ray and batting champion Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres and the Philadelphia Phillies, respectively, on the 4th (KST), the day of the trade deadline.
Ray, a left-hander who won the American League (AL) Cy Young Award in 2021, was traded to San Diego, a National League (NL) West rival sharing the same division with San Francisco.
Ray, who currently records 10 wins, 6 losses, and a 3.08 ERA this season, has put up some of the most impressive performances in Major League Baseball, maintaining an ERA in the 1-run range since June.
San Diego, which significantly bolstered its starting rotation by acquiring Ray, sent minor league pitcher Miguel Mendez and infielder Joniel Hernandez to San Francisco.
In addition, San Francisco sent Arraez, a three-time batting title winner, and relief pitcher Caleb Kilian to Philadelphia.
In return, they received pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gehr.
Arraez, who has claimed the batting title three times, continues to lead the National League this season with a .324 batting average.
Led by franchise star-turned-President Buster Posey, San Francisco made a surprise appointment after last season by hiring Tony Vitello, who had no professional coaching experience, from the University of Tennessee as their new manager.
However, struggling as manager Vitello exposed various issues in team management, San Francisco slumped to the bottom tier of their division early on, effectively ending their hopes for a postseason berth.
