English Premier League (EPL) club Chelsea has signed veteran English midfielder Jordan Henderson (36, England).
Chelsea announced through its official website today that it has signed a two-year contract with Henderson, who has lifted a total of eight championship trophies, including in the EPL and UEFA Champions League.
Having acquired 35-year-old forward Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion on August 2, Chelsea has focused on gathering veterans to anchor the team by signing the older 36-year-old midfielder Henderson just two days later.
Henderson stepped onto the EPL stage via Sunderland in July 2008 and made his debut against Chelsea in November of that year.
While playing 79 official matches for Sunderland and earning selections for the England national team, Henderson transferred to Liverpool in June 2011 and took over as captain in June 2015 when Steven Gerrard left the club.
He enjoyed his prime years at Liverpool, experiencing the UEFA Champions League title in the 2018–2019 season and the EPL title in the 2019–2020 season.
After briefly experiencing Asian football by moving to Saudi Arabia's Al-Ettifaq in the 2023–2024 season, Henderson subsequently played for Ajax (Netherlands) and Brentford last season before receiving a call from Chelsea to return to a big club.
Henderson was selected for the England national team that competed in the 2026 North and Central America World Cup, and suffered the misfortune of injuring his left wrist after slipping while jumping over an advertising board during post-match celebrations following the Round of 16 match against Mexico.
Henderson shared his thoughts on joining, saying, "Considering the size of the club, the manager I respect, and the caliber of the players, it was a massive opportunity I couldn't turn down. I want to give everything on and off the pitch to help the team and my teammates as much as possible."
