The Taekwondo Promotion Foundation announced that it will host the Muju Taekwondowon 2026 World Taekwondo Grand Prix Series at Taekwondowon in Muju, North Jeolla Province, starting September 4 for a four-day run.
This marks the first time that a Grand Prix Series, rated as a World Taekwondo (WT) G-6 event, will be held in South Korea. The opening day on September 4 will feature the Taekwondo Day commemorative ceremony and the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix.
A total of 210 athletes and officials from 29 countries will participate in the World Para Taekwondo Grand Prix. Top-ranked athletes by Paralympic weight class, including 8 South Korean competitors, will compete in a tournament format across five weight classes for men and five for women in the K44 classification.
In addition, the World Taekwondo Grand Prix, running from September 5 to 7, will see 445 athletes and officials from 50 countries participate. Top-ranked Olympic athletes, including 24 South Korean competitors, will compete for titles across a total of eight Olympic weight classes, with four divisions each for men and women.
Kim Jung-heon, chairman of the Taekwondo Promotion Foundation, stated, "This series marks the official kickoff toward the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics," adding, "Along with the Taekwondo Day commemorative ceremony on September 4, we will smoothly operate the Grand Prix to deliver top-tier matches to taekwondo fans worldwide."
