Bloomberg reported on August 1 local time that four major U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) companies, engaged in a competition to expand data centers, have committed to related investments reaching 2.4 trillion dollars (approximately 3,452 trillion won) over the coming years.
This indicates that massive investments in AI infrastructure will continue going ahead.
Alphabet, Meta Platforms (Meta), Microsoft (MS), and Amazon have continuously increased their investment commitment amounts over the past year regarding data center lease agreements, buildings, energy, and AI equipment, according to Bloomberg.
The commitments are a mix of short-term spending and long-term agreements spanning up to several decades.
Alphabet, the operator of Google, disclosed last week that it has incurred spending obligations amounting to 902 billion dollars through unfulfilled purchase commitments, contractual obligations, and pre-commencement leases.
This figure represents more than a ninefold increase compared to a year ago.
This includes contracts related to technical equipment and energy supply.
Meta also significantly increased its investment commitment amount by disclosing plans for 700 billion dollars in future investment expenditures.
Half of this consists of data center lease expenditures, which are scheduled to be paid in installments over 30 years.
Meta's total commitment amount jumped more than eightfold compared to a year ago.
In their recent earnings announcements, these companies also mentioned the necessity to preempt massive demand for AI computing power and presented plans to expand investments.
