Director Christopher Nolan expressed deep gratitude for the affection and support shown by Korean audiences for his films.
Attending a press conference for his film "The Odyssey" held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on the morning of the 3rd, Nolan shared regarding his visit to Korea, which was realized through his active request, "I have wanted to come to Korea for a long time."
Director Nolan said, "I think it started around 'Interstellar'. I know that Korean audiences loved 'Interstellar' very much back then, and I understand it had a very long theatrical run. When you make a movie, it is truly amazing and wonderful when people in a country you have never visited love your film."
He added, "So I wanted to come to Korea myself with my film and hear people's stories. I wanted to come during 'Tenet' as well, but I couldn't because of COVID-19. I am so glad I can visit with 'The Odyssey' this time."
True to Director Nolan's words, "Interstellar", released in 2014, achieved explosive box office success in Korea. It was released in November, which was then classified as an off-season, and set an interesting record by surpassing 10 million moviegoers in 50 days. It continued its long run for over two months afterward, gathering a total of 10.38 million viewers. This remains the highest box office record among Director Nolan's films to this day.
Domestic audience interest in his new work "The Odyssey" is also fierce. It has greenlit box office success by recording a 39 percent reservation rate and 340,000 pre-sold tickets.
"The Odyssey" depicts the events that unfold as Odysseus (Matt Damon), a hero who led the 10-year Trojan War to victory, embarks on a journey to return to his wife Penelope (Anne Hathaway) and son Telemachus (Tom Holland), who are waiting for him while taking advantage of the king's absence. The film opens on August 5.
