The 21st Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival wrapped up its three-day run on August 2. Held at Songdo Moonlight Festival Park in Incheon, the festival featured 66 teams from home and abroad, drawing approximately 150,000 concertgoers.
This year's slogan was "REBOOT. THE PORT OPENS." Efforts to address past shortcomings were evident across the venue. Organizers focused on reducing wait times by dividing the ticket booth into two to separate entry and exit flows. Considering the wide venue where movement is frequent in midsummer, convenience facilities such as pop-up stores and event experience zones were also placed throughout the site.
The headliners varied each day. The first day on July 31 was filled by Khruangbin, the second day on August 1 by Massive Attack, and the final day on August 2 by Pixies, completing a diverse spectrum of lineups.
The presence of domestic artists stood out particularly on the second day, August 1. Lee Seung-yoon, who performed for the fifth consecutive year (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026), opened with "Waterfall" and went on to present a total of 10 songs, including "PunKanon," "Nonsense," "Expensive Hangover," "Rebellion," and "To the Mind I Want to Be Found Out." Though he spoke for less than a minute, he made broad use of the stage and showed a provocative sense of freedom, even walking out into the middle of the aisles among the audience.
The band Hyukoh also performed 15 songs nonstop without a single comment. They only briefly spoke with the audience right before their final song, delivering an unyielding performance so intense that the vocalist's voice cracked in the middle of the set. Throughout the day's performance, the mosh pit remained active and excited the crowd. In addition, collaborative performances with Jang Pil-soon and guitarist Ham Chun-ho elevated the evening atmosphere.
As the festival took place amid a heatwave with daytime highs nearing 40°C (104°F), safety issues were also a major concern. In fact, an ambulance was dispatched to transport an audience member showing symptoms of heatstroke. Organizers responded by expanding medical booths compared to last year, stationing medical staff and ambulances throughout the venue at all times, operating cool zones, deploying water spray trucks, and improving waiting pathways.
The atmosphere on-site was also reflected in the concertgoers' preparedness. Quite a few people brought ice packs filled in cooler bags, mats, umbrellas to block the sun, portable chargers, arm sleeves, and handheld fans, yet consecutive responses noted that the heat was still difficult to endure. LUSH washed away the midsummer heat with a striking event titled "We Will Wash You."
"Pentarobics," a participatory program hosted by comedian Kim Hye-sun, combined full-body workouts with rock festival vibes, drawing audiences to the front of the stage even during waiting times. Among the audience, favorable reviews continued, saying, "Operations have improved compared to last year."
Massive Attack, which decorated the nighttime slot, brought socio-political messages to the forefront. Set against documentary-style visuals, vocalist Elizabeth Fraser joined the stage to deliver a live rendition of their signature song, "Teardrop."
The Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival is a representative rock festival held in midsummer, where the weather serves as the biggest variable.
Whether a festival held in extreme heat becomes a "hardship" or another form of "romance" depends on the essence of a festival pursuing rock music. In that regard, this year's festival once again reaffirmed the reputation of South Korea's largest rock festival by providing 150,000 crowds with impressive memories and experiences while leaving expectations for next year.
