Receiving work-related communications during vacation is not really a surprise.
In fact, half of office workers report having this experience. Let us take a closer look.
The civic group Workplace Gabjil 119 surveyed 1,000 office workers.
Nearly half of the respondents, or 48.8%, answered that they had received work-related communications while on vacation.
So what did they do after receiving these contacts?
37.7% said they immediately handled the work from their vacation spot, home, or a cafe, and 15.8% even responded that they went to work or returned to the field.
The survey showed that work contacts during vacation were more frequent for those with higher salaries and higher job positions.
The response rate was higher among those earning 5 million won or more per month, middle managers, and those with five or more years of tenure.
Labor circles are pointing out that such practices infringe upon the right to rest.
Amendments to the Labor Standards Act aimed at restricting work instructions outside of working hours via phone, text, or messenger were proposed in July and September 2024, respectively.
However, they remain pending in the National Assembly to this day.
Well, since there are attempts to block this through the law, wouldn't it be better to just avoid contacting people if possible?
