Eleven police officers were injured in a bomb attack suspected to be the work of armed rebel forces at a police facility in Cúcuta, a border city in northwestern South America's Colombia, on August 1, local time, according to the Associated Press.
According to reports, an explosive device detonated in a truck parked outside the police headquarters early that morning, blowing off the building's roof and shattering windows.
Cúcuta, where the explosion took place, is a major operational area for Colombian rebels.
Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez pointed to the armed group National Liberation Army (ELN) as being behind the attack, stating, "We firmly condemn this terrorist attack."
The attack occurred as conservative President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella prepares to take office on August 7.
Colombia, scarred by a history of a long civil war, continues to grapple with illegal activities surrounding the expansion of influence over cocaine trafficking between the ELN and remnants of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), a former rebel organization that signed a peace agreement with the government.
