Police have arrested over 5,200 drug offenders during a focused crackdown in the first half of this year.
Among them, about 1,000 individuals have been placed under detention.
The National Office of Investigation under the National Police Agency announced today (August 2) that it apprehended 5,203 drug offenders and detained 1,039 of them as a result of a three-month intensive crackdown starting in March.
Compared to the same period last year, arrests increased by 94 and detentions by 75. Notably, arrests of distribution offenders—including manufacturers, smugglers, and sellers—reached 2,040, accounting for 39.2% of the total, which is higher than the 36.4% recorded during the same period last year.
In the second half of the year, the police plan to focus their investigative capabilities by adding online and foreign drug crimes as primary targets for crackdown.
Hong Seok-ki, head of the National Office of Investigation, said, "We will strengthen cooperation with overseas investigative agencies, customs, and other domestic related organizations to block the inflow of narcotics into the country, and concentrate police investigative capabilities on arresting domestic distribution offenders."
