Candidate Kim Min-seok secured a narrow victory over candidate Jung Chung-rae in the first regional tour primary to select the leader of the Democratic Party of Korea.
Following joint campaign rallies held today (August 1) in South and North Chungcheong provinces as well as at the Daejeon Convention Center for Daejeon and Sejong, the Democratic Party tallied the results of the dues-paying party member (kwonli dangwon) vote and announced the outcome.
The vote count showed candidate Kim Min-seok taking first place with 45.05 percent of the total votes, while candidate Jung Chung-rae followed with 44.61 percent, narrowing the gap between the two candidates to 0.44 percentage points.
Candidate Song Young-gil recorded a vote share of 10.34 percent.
In this party convention, which applies a "one person, one vote" system for the first time, the reflection ratio for the leadership election electorate is 70 percent for delegates and dues-paying party members, and 30 percent for the general public. Only the results of the dues-paying party member votes are disclosed during regional primaries.
The results of the delegate votes and public opinion polls will be finalized and announced at the party convention scheduled to be held in Daejeon on August 17, following the conclusion of the regional tour primaries.
Meanwhile, if no candidate secures a majority of the total votes in this primary, the race will be decided using a preferential voting system. Under this method, if there is no majority winner, the secondary choices of voters whose first-choice ballots went to the lowest-ranking candidates (excluding the top two) are added up to determine the final winner.
