The Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) recommended lawyer Choi Gil-su, a former prosecutor, as a candidate for the special inspector general today (31st).
Previously, the People Power Party nominated lawyer Kang Ji-shik, also a former prosecutor.
Once the National Assembly reaches a bipartisan agreement and recommends three candidates, the president will appoint one of them.
The special inspector general is an independent body tasked with overseeing the president's spouse, relatives within the fourth degree of kinship, and senior presidential officials above the rank of senior secretary. The post has remained vacant for 10 years since Lee Suk-soo, the inaugural special inspector general appointed during the Park Geun-hye administration, resigned while investigating allegations of wrongdoing against then-Senior Presidential Secretary for Civil Affairs Woo Byung-woo.
