The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced today (the 31st) that starting next month in August, veterans and their families will be able to receive support for dementia screening and treatment management costs through local clinics, hospitals, or dementia-safe centers near their residences.
Previously, veterans and their families were excluded from the dementia screening and treatment cost support provided by dementia-safe centers because they were already eligible for medical expense support at 6 veterans' hospitals and 1,025 contracted hospitals.
Going forward, when veterans receive dementia treatment and related services at clinics, hospitals, or dementia-safe centers near their addresses, they will be eligible for support for dementia treatment management and screening costs.
However, to prevent duplicate support, veterans who utilize veterans' hospitals and contracted hospitals will be excluded from support provided by dementia-safe centers.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs expects that approximately 39,000 people will newly receive support for dementia treatment costs following this expansion of support for veterans' medical care.
Dementia screening costs can be received by those who are deemed to need diagnostic and differential screening for dementia at hospitals partnered with dementia-safe centers, provided they meet the age criterion of being 60 years of age or older and the income criterion of 120 percent or less of the median income.
The cost for dementia diagnostic screening is provided up to 150,000 won per person.
Veterans wishing to apply for dementia treatment management and screening support can do so starting August 1 by visiting the dementia-safe center at the public health center with jurisdiction over their resident registration area, or by applying via mail or fax.
Detailed information regarding application criteria and methods can be obtained from the dementia-safe centers.
Minister of Health and Welfare Jung Eun-kyung stated, "We expect that through early detection and systematic management of dementia for veterans and their families who have dedicated themselves to the country, accessibility to dementia treatment and related services will be enhanced, and their quality of life will be further improved."
Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kwon Oh-ul stated, "We will continue to cooperate closely across ministries to further expand medical and welfare support that veterans can experience in their daily lives."
