▲ South Korea-Chile summit joint press conference
Chilean President José Antonio Kast said on the 30th (local time), "In Korea, there is a saying that 'many hands make light work.' Exchanges on critical minerals between South Korea and Chile can be understood from this perspective."
Following a summit with President Lee Jae-myung at the presidential palace in Santiago, President Kast mentioned minerals such as lithium and copper, which Chile holds in abundance, during a joint press conference, stating, "These are very important elements for development in Korea as well," and made the remarks.
He also emphasized the importance of multi-faceted exchanges, noting that "Chilean wine and fruit occupy a significant place in Korean households."
In addition, he introduced that "the people of Chile are getting closer to Korean culture through K-pop and BTS," adding, "Young people also show great interest in studying the Korean language and pursuing master's degree programs in Korea."
Regarding the science and technology sector, he mentioned that the two countries are cooperating on Antarctic research conducted at the Sejong Station near Santiago, explaining, "We intend to take our exchanges a step further."
He then extended an invitation, saying, "In that vein, I invite President Lee to visit Antarctica once."
Along with this, regarding the resumption of discussions to modernize the bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) triggered by this summit, President Kast stated, "This will contribute to advancing the relations between the two countries."
Furthermore, he expressed hope that "exchanges will become more active beyond economic aspects, extending to the defense industry and security issues."
President Kast told President Lee, "I would like to welcome you to Chile once again. Please consider Chile as your own home."
In response to such hospitality, President Lee said in the joint press conference, "On behalf of the people of the Republic of Korea, I express my gratitude," and added, "I hope President Kast will also visit South Korea in the near future so that we can meet there."
