The Personal Information Protection Commission has imposed a fine of 53.979 billion won on KT over personal information leaks and unauthorized small-sum payments involving illegal femtocells, which are ultra-small base stations.
This marks the fourth-largest fine ever levied against an individual company.
The Personal Information Protection Commission determined that KT failed to detect the unauthorized equipment's connection to its internal network for 11 months, resulting in approximately 240 million won in damages suffered by 368 customers.
In addition, the commission ordered KT to submit recurrence prevention measures within three months and decided to file a criminal complaint against the company separately for obstructing the investigation.
