President Lee Jae-myung highlighted the recent arrest of a voice phishing ring based in Kazakhstan targeting South Korean nationals, emphasizing that "crimes targeting South Koreans will be tracked down and eradicated anywhere in the world."
President Lee, who is currently on a tour of South America, posted a message on his social media late last night (the 29th) along with a report detailing the arrest of the Kazakhstan-based voice phishing group, stating, "It is best to abandon the notion that crimes committed abroad will go unpunished."
The attached report stated that the government's special task force (TF) on transnational crime, alongside the National Intelligence Service and the police, conducted a joint operation with Kazakh authorities on the 23rd to arrest 19 members of the South Korean voice phishing organization.
They are accused of impersonating Financial Supervisory Service officials and swindling approximately 600 million won from 16 victims.
Excluding five individuals residing in South Korea, government authorities plan to sequentially repatriate the 14 suspects arrested locally in Kazakhstan to South Korea from the 27th of this month to the 5th of next month, while continuing to track and investigate 19 suspects who remain at large in other countries.
President Lee asked, "We have formed a voice phishing response team to crack down on these crimes, but can you feel that phishing damages and calls have decreased significantly?"
He also added, "Please give praise to the hardworking officials from the police, prosecution, National Intelligence Service, Financial Services Commission, and National Tax Service."
