As relentless heatwaves continue to intensify, temperatures in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, surpassed 40°C (104°F) today (July 29).
This marks the first time since climate statistical observations began that temperatures reached 40°C (104°F) in July, and both Yangsan and Busan broke their all-time record high temperatures since local observations began.
The extreme heat in the Yeongnam region is driven by a dual high-pressure system blanketing the country, combined with westerly winds blowing over the Taebaek Mountains, which introduced even hotter air into the area.
The sweltering weather persisted through the night in these regions.
Overnight temperatures in Yangsan exceeded 29°C (84°F), marking the hottest night on record for the area.
Such heatwaves and tropical nights are expected to continue for the time being.
Seoul has now experienced tropical nights for a week straight, and heatwave advisories have been upgraded to warnings in many areas.
In particular, severe heatwave warnings have been further expanded across the Yeongnam region, where extreme heat approaching 40°C (104°F) is forecasted to persist tomorrow as well.
Tomorrow's daytime high in Seoul is expected to reach 34°C (93°F) with a perceived temperature of 36°C (97°F), while Daegu is projected to climb to 37°C (99°F) and Ulsan to 38°C (100°F).
With the influence of the North Pacific high-pressure system persisting into next week, daytime temperatures in Seoul are also expected to exceed 35°C (95°F).
Citizens are advised to take thorough precautions to protect their health amidst the intense heat.
