A woman in her 60s, indicted for subjecting her stepdaughter sisters to horrific abuse—including forcing them to eat rice mixed with urine and feces and tearing the family apart by compelling them to send sexually explicit text messages to their father—has been sentenced to a heavy prison term.
According to the legal community on the 29th, Judge Ji Yoon-sub of Criminal Division 3 at the Cheongju District Court sentenced A, who was put on trial for violating the Child Welfare Act, to seven years in prison.
A was put on trial for abusing stepdaughter B and her sister 53 times between 2014 and 2023, a period during which the girls grew from elementary school students into high schoolers.
Investigations revealed that A subjected the sisters to severe mistreatment, such as serving them massive amounts of rice and forcing them to eat rice mixed with urine and feces if they failed to finish it within an hour, and forbidding them from showering or washing their clothes for up to two weeks, allowing them to do so only on so-called "forgiven days."
It was also uncovered that A made them massage her legs, assaulted them over trivial issues, and threatened them with weapons.
In addition, to deceive her husband, C, into believing she was sacrificing herself to take care of troublesome children, she forced the sisters to assault each other.
It was further revealed that A repeatedly coerced the sisters into sending sexually explicit text messages to their father, such as telling him to "come touch their bodies."
Because C lived at his workplace and stayed there, he was unaware of the abuse, and the sisters, kept under A's strict control, were unable to inform their father of the victimization.
A denied the charges, claiming that the sisters had mental health issues and made false statements, but the court rejected her claims.
Judge Ji pointed out, "The defendant completely denied the abuse during the investigation, but only admitted to specific parts when objective evidence such as transcripts was presented," adding, "No particular abnormalities were found in B's psychological evaluation results."
The judge continued, "B fled the house wearing only pajamas in April 2023, and the investigation into this case began after a passerby reported it," adding, "It is reasonable to view that B ran away not out of ordinary grievances, but because she could no longer endure the abuse."
The judge stated, "The defendant claimed that the sisters liked to eat and therefore overate, and that they disliked washing, which caused poor hygiene; however, immediately after leaving home, B adjusted better to school life and her hygiene improved," concluding, "The sentence was determined taking into consideration that the defendant has not shown genuine remorse."
