On July 26, three people swimming in the water died in a series of accidents at two undesignated beaches in Goseong, Gangwon Province. In particular, the beach where two of the fatalities occurred had operated as an official swimming beach until last year, but failed to open this year after failing to secure an operating entity and convenience facilities.
An official stated that warning signs stating that no water safety personnel are deployed at undesignated beaches, along with banners asking visitors to use nearby beaches, have been set up, and that safety personnel are also patrolling and advising people to refrain from entering the water.
However, according to reporting, it appeared difficult to constantly control swimming during the peak of summer when vacationers flock, and there are limitations in managing a long coastline without water safety personnel.
As the number of vacationers seeking quiet beaches increases, swimming at undesignated beaches continues. Tragic accidents are repeated every year at undesignated beaches.
