The Iranian judiciary has executed two men by hanging for charges related to the anti-government protests that peaked in January, according to Mizan, the judiciary's media outlet, today (July 28).
Abolfazl Sepahi and Amir Hossein Safari were convicted of attacking police officers with machetes and knives on January 8, when the protests were at their peak, dragging them while tied to road signs, and pouring gasoline on them before setting them on fire, the Iranian judiciary stated.
Mizan reported that they faced charges including "Moharebeh" (enmity against God) for brandishing weapons to spread fear and terror, as well as "corruption on earth" for committing acts that severely undermined national public order and security.
The semi-official Mehr News Agency reported that the hanging was carried out in a public square in Malekshahr, Isfahan Province, in central Iran, with onlookers watching.
While Iran has continued executing individuals linked to anti-government protests even amid its war with the United States and Israel, public executions are rare.
