Following a strong magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kyushu, Japan, on the afternoon of the 28th, tremors were felt across the southern regions of South Korea.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, a maximum instrumental seismic intensity of 3 was detected in areas including South Gyeongsang Province, Busan, South Jeolla Province, Gwangju, and Jeju Island.
An instrumental seismic intensity of 3 refers to shaking that is "noticeable to people indoors, especially on upper floors of buildings, and causes parked cars to rock slightly."
Tremors with an instrumental seismic intensity of 2 were recorded in Gangwon Province, Gyeonggi Province, North Gyeongsang Province, Daegu, Ulsan, North Jeolla Province, South Chungcheong Province, and North Chungcheong Province.
An instrumental seismic intensity of 2 corresponds to shaking that "is felt only by a small number of people in quiet settings or on upper floors of buildings."
Numerous posts reporting that tremors were felt were uploaded to social networking services such as X, formerly known as Twitter.
The earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.1, occurred at 4:27 p.m. today at a point 23 km south of Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
The depth of the hypocenter was estimated to be 10 km.
