Heavy monsoon rains and subsequent floods in Pakistan have killed more than 100 people over the past month, authorities reported.
According to Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on the 28th local time, 109 people have died nationwide from heavy rain and floods since June 26th.
A significant number of the victims were killed when buildings collapsed after heavy downpours.
About half of the fatalities occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest, near the border with Afghanistan.
The cumulative number of injured is estimated to be around 300, and some 400 houses have been damaged.
Last week in the eastern province of Punjab, seven people, including two children, died from roof collapses and drowning, while 20 others were injured.
Videos shared on social media showed people wading through rainwater on flooded roads or evacuating by boat.
In the Muridke area of Punjab province, people who remain isolated are still waiting for rescue teams.
Pakistan's meteorological experts have forecast that heavy downpours could hit the country again later this week.
In neighboring Afghanistan, floods and heavy rain also killed 34 people over a one-week period from the 20th to the 26th.
Additionally, about 100 people went missing in eastern Nuristan province.
South Asian countries, including Pakistan and Afghanistan, experience the monsoon rainy season every year from June to September.
While the rain during this period cools down intense heat and helps with crop cultivation, poor drainage and sewage infrastructure in South Asian nations frequently lead to massive casualties.
In particular, over the past few years, climate change has caused frequent cloudbursts—concentrated, heavy downpours in narrow areas over a short period—in the Indian Himalayan region and northern Pakistan.
Previously in 2022, record-breaking floods and heavy rain in Pakistan killed 1,737 people, with estimated economic losses reaching approximately 55.6 trillion won in Korean currency.
During the monsoon season from June to August of last year, another massive flood struck Pakistan, killing about 1,000 people and injuring more than 1,000 others.
