It has been confirmed that Soonchunhyang University selected 11 more medical school freshmen than its initial recruitment quota this year due to a staff member's mistake.
According to the Ministry of Education and other sources, the total admissions quota for Soonchunhyang University College of Medicine for the 2026 academic year across early and regular admissions is 102 students. However, during the additional recruitment process held this past February, the university selected a total of 113 students, which is 11 more than the quota.
While contacting additional recruitment successful candidates to confirm their enrollment at Soonchunhyang University's medical school, a staff member's mistake led to 11 extra students being registered, even though registration was already complete and there were no vacant seats.
Soonchunhyang University stated that after the selection of freshmen concluded, it voluntarily notified the Ministry of Education that more freshmen than planned were recruited due to an administrative error.
The issue is that the admissions quota for the medical school for the 2028 academic year will be reduced by the exact number of students mistakenly over-admitted this year.
The Ministry of Education investigated the matter while inspecting university quotas and actual enrollment numbers.
Generally, starting in March after freshman selection concludes, the ministry conducts a comprehensive investigation to verify whether universities selected freshmen in accordance with their recruitment quotas.
Upon confirming these facts through the investigation, the Ministry of Education notified the university to reduce Soonchunhyang University's medical school recruitment quota for the 2028 academic year by 11 students compared to the original quota, in accordance with relevant regulations.
The Ministry of Education stated, "There will be no separate disadvantages for the students who have already enrolled."
However, it seems difficult for the university to avoid criticism that the admissions opportunities for test-takers in the 2028 academic year will be reduced solely due to an administrative error by a staff member.
