The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it raised the heatwave disaster crisis alert to the 'severe' level as of 3:00 PM today (the 27th) and activated the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters for heatwave disasters.
Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung instructed relevant agencies and local governments to prioritize the lives and safety of citizens and implement field-oriented heatwave responses.
The ministry plans to strengthen monitoring for vulnerable groups such as vulnerable elderly residents, rooftop room (jjokbang) residents, and the homeless, and check whether cooling supplies are being sufficiently provided.
It also plans to inspect and monitor compliance with heatwave safety guidelines at outdoor work sites and vulnerable business locations, directly visit elderly farmers to check on their well-being, and advise them to refrain from outdoor activities.
In addition, the operation status of heatwave shelters and heat reduction facilities, such as whether cooling devices are working and their accessibility in the field, will be examined, and operating hours will be extended depending on weather conditions such as tropical nights.
For regions where a severe heatwave warning has been issued, the ministry plans to distribute a "Severe Heatwave Warning Response Guide," dispatch additional field situation management officers to inspect response statuses, and support the distribution of heatwave prevention facilities to livestock farms and the aquaculture industry.
Minister Yoon said, "Heatwaves are a disaster that hits vulnerable people even harder, such as residents in jjokbang villages, elderly people living alone, and outdoor workers," adding, "We will make every effort to prevent casualties by implementing protection measures such as expanding the operation of heatwave shelters and working closely with local governments."
He went on to urge, "During hot daytime hours, please drink plenty of water and take a rest," and added, "In areas where severe heatwave warnings have been issued, immediately halt outdoor activities and move to a cool place."
