Amid armed clashes over control of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 26th local time that Iran and Oman have achieved meaningful progress in technical discussions regarding safe navigation through the strait.
According to Iran's state-run IRIB broadcaster, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that several rounds of vice-ministerial level talks were held with Oman in Tehran on Friday and Saturday.
According to Baghaei, Iran and Oman, both littoral states of the Strait of Hormuz, exchanged wide-ranging views on common principles and operational mechanisms to manage safe vessel navigation within the strait under the premise of respecting each other's sovereign rights.
Baghaei added that the discussions were highly productive and yielded meaningful progress, and that technical and political consultations between the two countries will continue.
However, Baghaei noted that there have been no changes yet regarding the actual navigation status of vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.
Citing Article 5 of the post-war Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the United States, Iran claims exclusive control over the Strait of Hormuz, insisting that vessels must follow the routes designated by Iran, and has attacked ships attempting to pass through the strait outside of these routes.
In response, the United States has continued airstrikes against Iran and is gradually expanding their scope, heightening concerns over the resumption of full-scale war.
