U.S. pop star Katy Perry stated on the 25th (local time) that the White House's unauthorized use of her hit song in an Iran war promotional video is "unacceptable."
According to The Washington Post (WP), Perry posted on social media X that day, writing, "I did not approve this, was never asked, and would never condone it."
She emphasized that she felt "deep shock and outrage" over the White House promotional video, adding, "My music is meant to bring people together, not to glorify war."
Previously, the White House used Perry's 2010 hit song "Firework" as background music in a Shorts video posted on its official TikTok account on the 23rd.
In the video, scenes of bombs exploding in Iran were cross-edited to match the part where Perry sings, "Boom, boom, boom."
Perry is the partner of former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who has publicly clashed with U.S. President Donald Trump on several occasions, and she participated in the campaign for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris in the 2024 U.S. presidential election.
The White House has not released a statement regarding Perry's public criticism.
The video remains posted on the official White House account.
In the U.S. popular music scene, cases of artists protesting the unauthorized use of their music by U.S. government agencies have been continuing recently.
Regarding the use of her song "Bye" in a video capturing immigration enforcement actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents last June, pop star Ariana Grande left a comment containing profanity and warned, "Never use my music for this savage, inhumane, and heinous bullshit."
Other singers, including Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, and the rock band Semisonic, have also criticized ICE for unauthorized use of their songs in promotional videos.
