The Ministry of the Interior and Safety (MOIS) announced today (July 24) that as a severe heat wave warning was issued for Pohang and Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province, it has dispatched on-site situation management officers to those areas to inspect the implementation of heat wave countermeasures and on-site safety management conditions.
The ministry also warned that heat-related illnesses can surge under severe heat wave warning conditions, instructing local authorities to step up monitoring activities for the elderly, farmers, and outdoor workers, while advising residents to refrain from outdoor activities.
MOIS urged authorities to extend the operating hours of cooling centers and heat reduction facilities so that citizens can escape the heat, and to utilize local autonomous disaster prevention groups to guide residents to cooling centers.
Kim Yong-gyun, head of the Natural Disaster Management Office at MOIS, emphasized during a meeting held after the issuance of the severe heat wave warning, "A severe heat wave warning is a very serious situation that can cause severe damage to the lives and health of citizens." He added, "We urge related agencies to make an all-out response using all available means, including emergency text messages and disaster broadcasts, and ask citizens to refrain from outdoor activities."
As temperatures in the North Gyeongsang region, including Pohang, hit 39°C (102°F) as of 2:00 PM today (July 24) and extreme heat waves of 38°C (100°F) or higher are expected to continue through July 25 and 26, severe heat wave warnings were issued for Pohang and Gyeongju.
