Amid growing controversy over alleged police corruption linked to the botched investigation into the Jang Yoon-ki case, SBS has learned that a senior police officer who has spent over 30 years working exclusively in the Gyeongnam region is undergoing a high-intensity inspection by the Korean National Police Agency over allegations of sexually harassing female subordinates for years.
Superintendent A, assigned to the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency, is accused of sexually harassing junior female police officers during company dinners over the past several years.
The number of victims identified by police so far is known to be over 10, and this figure could increase further during additional investigations.
In addition, Superintendent A faces allegations of workplace abuse, such as forcing subordinates to pay for his drinks in exchange for promotions, as well as insubordination, including shouting verbal abuse at the head of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency after being transferred to a different district within the provincial agency during the personnel reshuffle in the first half of this year.
Superintendent A reportedly earned the nickname "King of Geoje" due to deep-rooted local connections built while working for a long time in the public safety intelligence division handling regional information.
Following the collection of related intelligence, the National Police Agency initiated a formal inspection led by the Inspection Division early this month and placed Superintendent A on leave last week.
Recognizing the severity of the sexual misconduct issues during the probe, the police also deployed the Human Rights Protection Division—which is responsible for investigating sexual misconduct cases and protecting victimized employees within the police organization—starting on the 20th to conduct joint inspection investigations.
