OpenAI President Says 'Kimi is Great... Unclear If GPT Was Distilled'

OpenAI Co-founder and President Greg Brockman has stated that it is uncertain whether Chinese startup Moonshot AI's recently unveiled open-weight AI model, "Kimi K3," misappropriated the company's technology.

According to Bloomberg, Brockman said in an interview with the outlet that it is "still too early" to determine whether Kimi K3 underwent so-called "distillation."

Michael Kratsios, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), posted on social media that day, claiming, "We have received information that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's '(Claude) Fable.' Moonshot AI has developed a sophisticated internal platform capable of large-scale distillation of U.S. models and used rapidly changing approaches to evade detection."

Regarding "Kimi K3," Brockman evaluated it as "without a doubt, a pretty great model."

He noted that he has seen estimates placing China about four months behind the United States in AI model development, while emphasizing that OpenAI still maintains a "huge advantage" thanks to its early investments in computing resources and years of research.

Brockman remarked that the notion of open-weight models being free is a "misconception," adding, "These models also run on massive computing resource infrastructure, and computing resources are expensive."
