Police have launched an investigation after a series of complaints were filed alleging that a jewelry shop owner in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, fled with customers' gold and cash.
The Gyeonggi Seongnam Sujeong Police Station announced today (July 23) that it has received 12 complaints accusing the shop owner in his 50s, only identified by his surname A, of fraud since earlier this month.
The complainants claim that A promised to sell them gold at prices lower than the market rate, took their money without delivering the gold, or took gold from customers under the pretext of paying interest and then went into hiding without returning it.
Based on the complaints filed so far, police estimate the scale of the damage to be 500 million won in cash and approximately 500 don (traditional Korean unit of weight, equivalent to about 1,875 grams) of gold, valued at around 360 million won.
However, victims reportedly claim that many others have yet to report the damage to the police, and based on their own tally, the total scale of the damage reaches 7,000 don of gold, valued at over 5 billion won.
The Seongnam Sujeong Police Station, which initially received the case, has transferred it to the Gwangju Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, which has jurisdiction over A's residence.
The Gwangju police plan to continue the investigation by gathering the statements and claims from the complainants.
